Due to Covid-19, Thrive’s Spanish classes are currently on hold.

HS/Adult Spanish Classes 2019-2020

Spanish is the most common second language used in the U.S. and is the official language in numerous countries in Central America, South America, and Europe. Our classes are designed to help students enjoy learning Spanish, be willing to use what they learn, and be excited about cultures where Spanish is used.  They also lay a positive foundation for further language learning.

All Spanish classes emphasize listening & speaking, but also include practice reading and writing to help develop overall skills in Spanish. Students will be most successful if they are able to commit 1.5 hours or more to review and homework outside of class each week.  If you need help deciding which level is appropriate, please reach out to us.  We would be happy to have you observe a current class or talk with you about the level.

  • For adults & high school students
  • Thursdays 7:30pm to 9:00pm
  • 34 classes running from September 5th through May 21st
  • $25 registration fee
  • $180 tuition (See payment options below or the fee waiver policy if cost is a barrier.)
  • No class due to holidays on 11/28, 12/26, 1/2, 4/9 (Class on 12/19 is part of our Posada event.)

We encourage students to attend all classes; however, new students are welcome to join throughout they year if their levels are appropriate. Please call for information on prorated costs.

Thrive’s Language Cafe is also available to provide optional conversation practice for an hour before each class.

Beginning Spanish-part 1

This is a great class for students who are new to studying Spanish.  It helps students grasp the basics in a friendly, encouraging environment with optional homework that can help students make faster progress.  It also exposes students to the fascinating variety of cultures where Spanish is spoken. We are grateful to Patrick Watts for teaching this class again.

The textbook for this class is the student book for Avancemos 1 (ISBN: 978-0618594061). We will be using the first 1/2 of the book in this set of classes.  Students are welcome to purchase a new copy or used copy (be sure it does not already have many answers filled in).  Students should have the book ready to bring with them for the first class. A copy of the tentative course outline can be found here.

Beginning Spanish-part 2 (on hold for 2019-2020)

This is a great class for students who already know a little bit of Spanish or may have studied Spanish a long time ago.  It helps students grasp the mid-beginning Spanish in a friendly, encouraging environment with optional homework that can help students make faster progress.  It also continues to expose students to the fascinating variety of cultures where Spanish is spoken. This class specifically builds off of our Beginning Spanish-part 1 class; however, new students are also welcome.

The textbook for this class is the student book for Avancemos 1 (ISBN: 978-0618594061). We will be using the second 1/2 of the book in this set of classes.  Students are welcome to purchase a new copy or used copy (be sure it does not already have many answers filled in).  Students should have the book ready to bring with them for the first class.

Intermediate Spanish-part 2 (on hold for 2019-2020)

Do you have some Spanish but struggle to use it fluently in conversation, or do you just miss the ability to practice and build on your Spanish skills?  This class is a great option for students who already know the basics and want to increase their skills, knowledge and fluency.  We are grateful to Laura Lopez Arce for teaching this class!

The textbook for this class is the student book for Avancemos 2 (ISBN:978-0554025322).  Students can purchase a new copy or used copy (be sure it does not already have many answers filled in).  Students should have the book ready to bring with them for the first class.  We will be using the second 1/2 of the book in this set of classes. Class builds off of last year’s class which used the first half of the book.  However, new students are welcome to join. If you have questions about your readiness for this level, feel free to contact us.

Registration & Fee Details

Please contact us for more information. There is a limit of 14 students per class.  Thrive reserves the right to cancel classes with fewer than 8 students enrolled. Students are encouraged to register online.  However, if you would like a paper registration form, please call 570-337-2898.  The normal registration deadline is August 29.

In addition to tuition, a registration fee of $25 must be paid upon registration to confirm your space in class.

The following are payment options for tuition for class from Sept. through May.  Unless otherwise noted, payments can be mailed in before the due date or paid via Paypal on our website.

  1. $25 registration fee + pay the total amount due prior to the first class and receive a 10% discount.
  2. $25 registration fee + pay 1/2 ($90) prior to the first class and 1/2 ($90) on or before January 16, 2020.
  3. $25 registration fee + pay in 9 monthly installments of $20 each (online payments only; due by the first of each month).

A discount is available for families with multiple students enrolled in Thrive’s foreign language classes. The first student pays regular price ($180), and additional students receive a 25% discount. If family members are in classes of differing lengths, the student in the longer session pays full price, and the student in the shorter session may pay the discounted rate.

If requested, pro-rated tuition ($6 per class) may be available if you are joining the class after September 26th or if your notify us of a planned absence of more than four classes at the time of registration.  If you change your mind about class, a pro-rated refund (minus the $25 registration fee), will be available until immediately following the third week of class.

A limited number of fee waivers for tuition and books are available for families who are experiencing financial difficulties and who meet Thrive’s income guidelines.  If possible, we ask all students, including those with a fee waiver, to pay the registration fee.  Please contact us for more information.  For students in this situation, we are happy to help now and trust that you will pass along help to someone else in the future.

Students purchase their own books.  Students may use any resource to purchase books, but if it helps to know, books are available through several major online retailers.
